Abstract

The treatment of injuries to the thoracic and lumbar spine is still the subject of controversial discussion. Despite extensive publications there is still a lack of prospective randomized studies on treatment; however, different opinions exist not only on which treatment should be selected but also on which classification of spinal injuries should be used. Furthermore, detailed questions have not been clearly answered. There are currently no clear recommendations on the approach route and even the aftercare is undertaken differently. Also, neither a superior classification can be deduced from the current literature nor are clear recommendations for action with respect to therapeutic measures or the type of operative treatment named. This article gives an overview of commonly used classifications, different therapeutic approaches as well as the different procedures and their development over time.
