An extract of the cyanobacterium P. tenue showed a significant inhibitory effect on its own growth. Bioassay-directed fractionation has led to the identification of the auto-growth inhibitory substance as a mixture of fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic and linolenic acids appear to be predominantly responsible for the auto-growth inhibitory effect. © 1993, The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.
