The authors review the birth of interventional radiology (IR) and the origins of IR’s major interventional vascular procedures based on personal memories refreshed by review of early IR literature. These procedures include percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) with coaxial catheters and balloon catheters, vascular stenting, endovascular stent-grafting, selective thrombolysis, therapeutic vascular occlusion, and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). Illustrations include some early cases of interventional vascular procedures and pictures of some interventional pioneers.
