Abstract

Open common bile duct exploration is still required on rare occasions when other, less invasive methods fail, such as endoscopic sphincterotomy with retrograde removal or laparoscopic common bile duct exploration. This chapter discusses the different operative approaches to common bile duct exploration (both open and laparoscopic) and details the steps necessary for safe performance of this procedure.
