The threat of a ban on hard chrome plating of metal components from the beginning of September 2017 in Europe has led to the development of new coating technologies and systems. Thermal spraying, which is already an established industrial process scores with its high flexibility, but for many applications, the quality of the created protected coatings remains insufficient. A real alternative for hard chrome plating is extreme high‐speed laser metal deposition, which was developed by Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, ILT, with components from Laserline.
