Abstract

Depending on the type of splenic pathology encountered, the minimal access approaches involve the complete or partial resection of the spleen and splenic tissue. This chapter deals with both total-laparoscopic splenic resection as well as partial-laparoscopic splenic-tissue resection. The operation room setup, patient positioning, special instruments and port placement sites for both the types of procedures have been outlined. The indications, contraindications, preoperative considerations, technical notes and procedural variations have been listed. High-quality images with captions explain sequentially the steps of total-laparoscopic spleen resection and partial-laparoscopic splenic-tissue resection. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
