Abstract

AT&T Technologies, Inc. has developed a Robotic Nonstandard Component Inserter (RNSCI) capable of inserting a class of nonstandard components into printed wiring boards. This system is based on a fundamentally new concept, called the Vibratory Insertion Process (VIP). VIP's combination of high speed and high reliability has enabled the development of a machine which represents the state of the art in nonstandard component insertion. VIP overcomes positional inaccuracies inherent in nonstandard components, and reduces the need for high precision in the system's mechanical devices.
