New Ethnic Minorities and Society

Abstract

The migrations of the last half century have led to growing cultural diversity and the formation of new ethnic groups in many countries. Such groups are visible through the presence of different-looking people speaking their own languages, the development of ethnic neighbourhoods, the distinctive use of urban space, and the establish- ment of ethnic associations and institutions. In Chapter 8 we discussed the migratory process and its outcomes in two very different immigra- tion countries. In this chapter we will compare the position of the new ethnic communities or minorities in a wider range of Western societies.
