Abstract

Cellular behaviour, and, hence, the behaviour of physiological subjects are controlled and programmed by genes. Modelling gene expression is important both for understanding natural organisms and for constructing artificial genetic networks in synthetic biology. We start with the derivation of the Hill-type equations and, using this methodological framework, explain how gene expression provides production of a protein at a permanent concentration, genetic oscillations, or a genetic switch to enable a switching between two epigenetic states.
