This article argues, that the present Danish system of press ethics needs a revision. By tracking the history of the system, it tries to explain the peculiar Danish system, which combines voluntary standards of the media business with a legal system of accountability including a press council. It is further argued that this system, while working smoothly on its own premises, actually undercuts a much-needed debate over the possibilities and limitations of journalism in the increasingly commercialised media of the 21. century.
