Abstract

The value of digital radiography (DR) in the diagnosis and follow up of pediatric hip disorders was evaluated in 58 patients. Different aspects of image quality were analyzed by three independent observers. The results were compared with those obtained from 61 conventional radiograms. Moreover, dose measurements were performed in several patients and in a phantom. Dose measurements demonstrated a possible dose reduction of about 50% without deterioration of image quality relevant for the assessment of pediatric hip diseases. In most cases contrast was superior on digital radiographs, whereas spatial resolution was slightly inferior. Underexposure did not require additional exposure to obtain radiographs with sufficient image quality. Digital radiography seems to be able to replace conventional radiography in pediatric hip disorders.
