This chapter illustrates the diachronic evolution of French Research & Innovation (R&I) policy design. It begins by describing the organization of the national governance in the sector. Then, it reviews the main public interventions characterizing national R&I governance starting from the early 2000s. The evolution of national R&I mix is discussed, with a specific focus on the politics of policy design practices, by contextualizing design choices in the broader historical and political environment of the country. Finally, the chapter analyzes national R&I policy design considering the different configurations of internal and external actor coordination practices. The chapter also provides an appendix where the R&I instrument mixes discussed are described in greater detail according to the proposed policy instrument typology.
