Abstract

Malignant ascites is a common problem in patients with advanced malignancies and peritoneal spread of tumour. Treatment strategies include paracentesis, diuretics and peritoneovenous shunts; however, there are no established evidence-based guidelines for optimal therapy. This review is intended to add clarity to the current procedures for the management of malignant ascites, and furthermore discusses new promising approaches. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
