Abstract

The aim of this study was to propose and analyze twomodels of associations to explain the relationships between Extraversion and Neuroticism traits, emotionalregulation strategies cognitive reappraisal (CR)and suppression of emotional expression (SEE) andanxiety and depression in children 9 to 12 years old.For this, 230 children of both genders of those ageswere evaluated in these variables and the models werecompared by Path Analisys. The results showed that CRpresented a total mediating effect on the relationshipof Extraversion with anxiety, which was not observedfor depression. The SEE submitted a partial mediatingeffect on the relationship of Neuroticism with anxietyand depression. These results have value to expand theknowledge available about the effect of these traits onclinical symptomatology which is useful for the preventionand treatment planning as well as for such an effectis through strategies that are themselves modifiable and/or trainable what constitutes an contribution for the designand content of children’s mental health programs.
