Abstract

Tree buttress volumes are significant in analyzing bioinformation of a forest. However, forestry researchers have no accurate method for estimating the volume of complex tree buttress roots. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning can be used to scan large multi-hectare areas of forests with thousands of trees. In this paper, we introduce a new method for accurate tree buttress volumes estimation based on the LiDAR system and the Poisson Surface Reconstruction algorithm.
