Abstract

(from the chapter) This chapter will address the conceptual convergence and, to a lesser extent, divergence across orientations on the subject of homework. First, we will define what is subsumed under the rubric of "homework." Next, we will discuss the debate over homework prescription. Then, we will articulate the various clinical or therapeutic advantages of homework that apply across orientations. Finally, we will identify the common principles underlying the use of homework in different approaches to psychotherapy. In distilling the information provided in each chapter, our aim is to offer therapists who subscribe to different orientations and clinicians who treat diverse populations a set of heuristics that will help them understand why homework is an important aspect of psychotherapy and a set of guidelines to help them use this important tool more effectively.
