Abstract

The way the motion picture industry portrays black people serves the interest of the dominant white class by keeping blacks from positions of power in American society. Hollywood defines how black males are portrayed on screen which in turn affects how young blacks define themselves. This article looks at how images of the black male in film are used to exclude blacks and examines several films to show how those images are changing.
