Abstract

The Toronto architect/interior designer firm Yabu Pushelberg was commissioned by denim retailer XX XY to design a striking storefront for their new Yonge Street, Toronto, store. The solution was to silkscreen giant stylised chromosomes on a wide swathe of white vinyl theatrical mesh suspended behind a glowing neon-and-acrylic logo. The logo letters were movable and the scrim could be adjusted to achieve varying effects to maintain the store's up-to-date image. The store wais described including a second curtain of architectural fabric at the rear of clear reinforced Klearspan vinyl. The project's image was defined as "Store as theater" by Pushelberg. Design and construction took eight months and project data is appended.
