A 29 year-old nullipara with pain in the right upper abdomen, hypertension and proteinuria was admitted to hospital at a gestational age of slightly more than 32 weeks with a tentative diagnosis of preeclampsia. Eight hours after admission she died from acute pulmonary and cardiac arrest. Autopsy revealed acute haemorrhage in a phaeochromocytoma of the left adrenal gland.
