Twenty-three newborn infants with congenital malformations of various types were screened for the presence of possible associated abnormalities of the genitourinary system. For this purpose, the infusion pyelogram and the131I Hippuran camera renogram were used, and the results compared in order to determine which was the best screening method. The camera renogram proved to be more reliable in terms of the quality of the study, if at least 30 μCi of isotope were utilized. Moreover, in three instances the renogram demonstrated findings not demonstrated by the infusion pyelogram. The camera renogram involves less radiation than the pyelogram. Since these studies indicate that the renogram may be more reliable than pyelography in the newborn, it is suggested that camera renography deserves further evaluation as a screening tool to be utilized in those neonates in whom such studies are indicated. © 1972.
