The purpose of developing an integrated wind-erosion modelling system (IWEMS) is to produce quantitative predictions of wind erosion on scales from local to global. The system should have the capacity of modelling the whole wind-erosion process, from particle entrainment through transport to deposition. This is a formidable task because, as depicted in Fig. 1.1, wind erosion is governed by a range of factors involving the atmosphere and the land surface. Thus, an IWEMS must couple models for the atmospheric, land-surface and aeolian processes and databases for land-surface parameters, so that the dynamics of wind erosion and the environmental control factors are adequately represented.
