Abstract

Clinical case studies facilitate the development of clinical reasoning strategies through knowledge and integration of the basic sciences. Case studies have been shown to be more effective in developing problem-solving abilities than the traditional lecture format. To enhance the learning experiences of students in biomechanics, clinical case studies were implemented. Gait data and motion capture images from patients with neuromuscular disorders were provided to third year students. Group discussions focused on establishing the causes of identified movement deviations based on biomechanical data and clinical data. Groups then prepared a treatment plan for each patient. The solutions from each group were then compared to the final decision made by the medical team supervising the patient's treatment. The case study approach was successfully implemented and informal feedback was very positive. (Contains 2 figures.)
