Abstract

Trafficking in human beings for labour exploitation, despite being one of the most prevalent manifestations of this phenomenon, still entails few convictions. This paper, based on 33 interviews with professionals from the criminal justice system and the labour field, analyses the obstacles they face when approaching this crime. The results of the research identified three types of barriers when dealing with these cases: those of a regulatory nature, those of an institutional nature - both of a pre or extra-procedural nature and those observed within the criminal process - and those related to the attitude of the professionals when addressing these situations. Having identified and listed the obstacles in each of these three areas, mechanisms are proposed to overcome them in order to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system in dealing with labour trafficking.
