Abstract

Never before have so many scientists around the world been so pressuredto publish their work in English. At the same time, never before hasthere been such great opportunity for scientists around the world tocommunicate quickly and widely with colleagues who share an interest inscientific endeavors. English as a lingua franca in science opens upglobal conversations to native and non-native speakers alike. Bypublishing scientific work, knowledge capital and social capital arecreated. In contrast, when scientific investigation is not reported in ascientific paper, the work is lost. Successful publication sets a newfoundation upon which further scientific discovery is possible.
