Abstract

In Austria, about 200/100,000 persons incur an ischemic stroke every year, 50/100,000 from a TIA. With a mortality rate of 20 % within a month and 28 % within a year, strokes are the second most common cause of death in western industrial nations. Age, hypertension, visceral adiposity and diabetes predispose for ischemic strokes, most thrombo-embolic strokes are caused by atrial fibrillation. Normalizing blood pressure in hypertensive patients has proven most effective in primary as well as in secondary prevention. ARBs may be more protective than any other antihypertensive in secondary prevention.
