Abstract

Iron ore deposits of the Lake Superior type within the Archaean and Proterozoic banded iron formations of Western Australia show consistent and stable directions of remanent magnetization. The palaeomagnetic poles of the ores do not correlate with poles of Post‐Cambrian Australian rocks, which suggests a Pre‐Cambrian age for the ore formation. Magnetic anisotropies of the ores are low and the distribution of the principal susceptibility axes tends to reflect the magnetic fabric of the host rocks. Copyright © 1968, Wiley Blackwell.
