Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects about 3% of the population or 100 million people worldwide. The prevalence is higher in the United States, affecting 6-7% of the population and is increasing at an astounding rate. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 30% of individuals with diabetes are undiagnosed. Furthermore, a third of children born in the United States in the year 2000 will develop diabetes, an estimated 28 million diabetic individuals within the next 50 years. © 2010 Springer-Verlag US.
