Abstract

Mild cognitive disorders are highly prevalent, but often overlooked. Even mild cognitive impairments can have a significant impact on work performance. In this chapter, we describe a number of mild cognitive disorders that can impact occupational function, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mild traumatic brain injury, HIV/AIDS, and age-related Mild Cognitive Impairment. An overview of each condition is provided, along with features of each condition that are important to consider. Specific recommendations for maximizing workplace performance and success are provided, including education about the disorder, medical and behavioral interventions, and considerations for enhancing the goodness of fit between the individual’s abilities and job demands. Additionally, since many forms of mild cognitive dysfunction are shared across conditions, a number of general recommendations are provided to assist patients and providers in enhancing workplace functioning.
