Superconductors within large-scale magnets can be subjected to high mechanical loads. These arise from three principal sources: 1. During fabrication, the conductor is subjected to both winding tension and bending strain. The latter can be particularly severe in dipole and quadrupole magnets, but also plays a role in small-bore high- field solenoids.
