Abstract

The COVID-19 crisis has raised numerous concerns amongst the privacy community, as research indicates emerging privacy risks. Here we frame those risks and focus, in particular, on what we have observed to be increased rate of self-disclosure on online social media. That is, individuals are sharing more personal information online in what appears to be an effort to stay connected with others during isolation and cope with additional stress. We outline a research agenda to further explore this finding and highlight the potential for this crisis to serve as a tipping point for self-disclosure norms more generally.
