Abstract

This article focuses on the influence of Thomas Paine on two of the most important political works by Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, examining the concepts, ideas and political positions appropriated by Mier from Paine’s 1776 pamphlet Common Sense. The specific narrative context is utilized in order to understand the uses and political intentions behind each work and their place within Mier’s entire body of work. This article highlights the common concerns of both political thinkers and the doctrinal background they shared, approaching their ideas from the perspective of the history of political language.
