Abstract

Moving images on a computer screen in real time (that is, 30 times per second) is discussed, and a major performance problem, the organization and access methods used for the image memory are considered. To solve this performance problem, a new kind of VLSI (very-large-scale integration) graphics chip is developed that provides a significant speed improvement over conventional graphics systems and promises to make real-time inexpensive display systems a reality. A Scanline raster memory (SLAM) chip is introduced that can modify from one to many thousands of pixels simultaneously since the whole scanline is accessed at once and any part of it may be modified in one memory cycle.
