Special considerations for the neuropsychological interview with older adults

Abstract

The clinical interview is an essential part of a neuropsychological evaluation for any age, but particularly among older adults because of the myriad of physical, cognitive, psychological and social changes associated with the normative aging process. This essential data can be used to guide the testing process, assist in formulating a differential diagnosis, and informing recommendations. This chapter provides guidelines for developing an interview designed to provide a level of insight and understanding of a patient's presentation that cannot be obtained from psychometric testing, and is specific to the presenting concerns of older adults.
