We have demonstrated in large scale geometrically modeled coupons an ability to significantly improve by a factor of more than 2.5x over conventional shot peening the fatigue lifetime of Navy aircraft arrestment hook shanks by applying laser peening to the key highly stressed area where the arresting shoe attaches to the shank. The deep level of residual stress (2.5 mm depth) provided by the laser peening is key to providing the fatigue improvement to this component loaded beyond the plastic limit. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.
