Abstract

Communication voids (i.e. holes) have negative effect on real time routing protocols. To decrease the energy consumption and also avoiding the voids in the sensor networks for real time application it is necessary to design an energy efficient routing protocol which handles holes in the network. In this paper, a new on-demand routing with void avoidance (ODVA) routing protocol has been proposed which efficiently handles and successfully delivers the packets. This protocol also ensures the effective load balancing and improves the network lifetime. The simulation results demonstrate that the ODVA protocol achieve higher packet delivery ratio, network lifetime and efficient usage of energy in comparison with other prevalent scheme. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH Berlin Heidelberg.
