Abstract

Wireless positioning technologies make it possible to keep track of mobile devices, and Web technologies make Web applications highly interactive. The combination of them gives rise to location-based Web applications, which generate and deliver Web content tailored to user locations. Location-based Web applications are able to utilize the enormous resources on the Web and allow users to use different location-based services without installing specific software. The paper presents a prototype of Web-based tracking and guiding - the Location-Based Botany Guide, which is a Web-based multimedia guiding system used in botanical gardens for biology students and visitors. The system adopts a general architecture for Web-based tracking and guiding, which consists of the Location Server, the Content Server, the Botanical Guiding Web Server and the clients. Personalization technology is applied to provide the users with personalized recommendations and presentations. © Institute for Computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2009.
