An experience with a young Cambodian neighbor in Oakland whom relatives believed to be possessed by a ghost leads the author to reflect on his evangelical Christian ministry in the community. This piece discusses tutoring students in the Oak Park neighborhood of Oakland, the role of PTSD in refugee communities, and the author’s identity as both a fifth-generation California and a Hakka—a member of a landless Chinese underclass.
