Abstract

Higher plants have been used with therapeutic purposes by all cultures. Brazil has the biggest biodiversity in the world. The country also occupies the 13th position in articles published in peer review journals. However, Brazilian production of plant derived drugs at all levels is very small. The reasons for this are discussed in this review.
