Abstract

Pregnancy after transplantation is common, particularly for women with kidney transplants. Several potential complications need to be considered in counseling women who wish to resume their reproductive life after transplantation; complications can occur that impact both the mother and the fetus. This manuscript reviews the common potential problems associated with pregnancy in maternal renal transplant recipients and discusses current information about fetal outcomes after in utero exposure to immunosuppressive agents. It is important to impart the potential risks and complications of pregnancy in renal transplant recipients to both the mother and her partner before embarking upon pregnancy, and pre-conception counseling is recommended to begin at the time of pre-transplant evaluation. © Copyright 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
