Abstract

The paper attempts to illustrate the concept behind a newly emerging area of research, the concept of production networks. The materialization of this paradigm requires clear definitions of the terms involved, setting up a reference architecture, design and development of supporting platforms and appropriate control methodologies with protocols and mechanisms. The main goal of the paper is to overview the different kinds of production networks, with special emphasis on architectures, advantages and open problems.
