Abstract

To reinforce and further promote various scientific exploratory activities in Antarctica and its surrounding waters, the Japanese Goverment has decided to build a new icebreaking research vessel - a triple - screw polar icebreaker with 30,000 shaft horsepower - which is nearly twice as big as the FUJI.The hull form of the new vessel has been developed with the aid of modern ship-model testing so as to achieve powerful icebreaking capability as well as favorable cruising performance. In this paper, the results of various model studies undertaken in the development program are extensively reported, and discussions and evaluation of these results are made in relation to the design feature of the hull forms, as well as in light of state-of the art ice-modeling technology. The predicted full-scale icebreaking capability of the new vessel based on the model test results is compared with those calculated from some existing prediction methods and the full-scale data of the FUJI.The results of model tests in ice-free water are also given, which included resistance and propulsion tests at normal cruising conditions, and overload tests at a very low-speed range.
