Abstract

This literature review covers published work in the year 2004 and is divided into the following sections: 1. Sediment characterization This section covers in the areas of field sampling, monitoring, and characterization of the nature of sediment contamination. 2. Links between sediment toxicity and chemistry. Key to site risk assessment and management decisions is a good understanding of how sedi toxicity is related to sediment chemistry. This section is divided into the following subsections: a. PAHs and PCBs in sediments b. Other organics in sediments c. Heavy metals in sediments 3. Sediment remediation. Sediment remediation technologies, aplication in the field, and monitoring of remediation progress are covered in this section. The main remediation technologies covered are sediment dredging, capping, bioremediation, and chemical treatment.
