A 17-year-old African American man was admitted to the hospital with Stage IV metastatic colon cancer, a recurrence from five years previously. His mother was very religious and was at his bedside constantly, and answered all questions directed to her son by the medical team. She had faith in God and in her son’s oncologist who she believed had previously cured her son’s cancer. The palliative care team was forbiddne to enter the patient’s room after they described his extremely poor prognosis and the possibility of transitioning to comfort care only.
