Abstract

of >30% in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease mortality was observed. 1,2 However, according to the latest figures of the European Heart Network, the annual mortality of CVD still exceeds 4 million (ie, 47% of all deaths) in Europe and 1.9 million (ie, 40% of all deaths) in the European Union. 2 Furthermore, despite a falling trend in most European countries, CVD remains the most common cause of death in women and men. The financial burden for the European Union economy is estimated to be almost €196 billion a year, of which 54% is attributable to healthcare costs, 24% to productivity losses, and 22% to the informal care of people with CVD.
