Staphylococcal and streptococcal diseases of the skin

Abstract

The short introduction includes a description of the pathogen and the laboratory diagnosis as well as the current resistance situation under consideration of the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates and their eradication in the ambulatory field. Subsequently, the diseases caused by staphylococci and streptococci are listed, which play an important role in clinical everyday life in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The clinical findings are further confirmed by characteristic images of clinical symptoms. The most important differential diagnoses are given for each disease. The sections on therapy represent the current state of knowledge, taking into account personal experience gained in clinical everyday life. In addition to the frequent diseases, such as erysipelas, impetigo, or abscesses, rather rare conditions are also listed, such as cutaneous botryomycosis, necrotizing fasciitis, or the group of toxin-mediated diseases such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome or recurrent toxin-related perineal erythema.
