Abstract

Most of the current shortcomings in relation to Clouds made up of sensing resources can be addressed, as detailed in past work from the authors, following a Sensing and Actuation as a service (SAaaS) approach, i.e. enabling an Infrastructure-oriented (IaaS-like) provisioning model for sensors and actuators. The aforementioned approach matches the technological requirements and constraints springing around certain application domains belonging to the Future Internet research area. One of the most prominent scenarios is computer-assisted data treatment and automation of urban areas and public facilities, going under the umbrella term of a so-called Smart City. Aim of this paper is to provide specific processes, rules and guidelines for the adoption of the SAaaS paradigm in IT infrastructure powering Smart Cities. Such artifacts are for assessing the feasibility of deploying Smart City applications over SAaaS, moreover the design of some specific use cases is presented and discussed. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
