Abstract

- contingency-shaped behavior is based on the direct link between responses and consequences; rule-governed behavior responds to other, socially introduced consequences - C-S vs. R-G easiest to distinguish when they conflict - we tend to resort to rules when consequences are weak (e.g., distant, unclear) or reinforce behavior that is not desired
