Abstract

Definition Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a term used to describe a group of chronic arthropathies involving individuals 16 years of age or younger. A diagnosis of JIA requires evidence of a persistent arthritis for at least 6 weeks. A subtype is delineated 6 months into the disease course based on number of joints involved and clinical characteristics (Tables 28, 29).
