Abstract

Companies such as Metro and Wal-Mart have long recognized the strategic advantages of digital supply chains. Their response has been straightforward: Start preparing now, even though the technical requirements for using radio-frequency identification (RFID) across the entire logistics chain lie some way in the future. Other retailers can learn from their example. Getting their basic processes in shape now will ease the transition to fully automatic supply chain event management (SCEM) later on. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
