Abstract

Internet gambling is a rapidly evolving mode of gambling and increasingly recognized by researchers, policy makers, industry groups, and community groups as having a substantial impact on society. Beginning as a handful of online casinos in the Caribbean, the industry has undergone a remarkable transformation with a period of rapid expansion followed by consolidation. A highly competitive market now exists based on sophisticated technology and increasingly informed and demanding consumers. There is clear evidence that Internet gambling participation and revenue are increasing, and many policies and regulations currently in place are ineffective. Internet gambling has distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional land-based gambling and appeal to new markets. These features pose both challenges and opportunities and it is essential that researchers, industry and government act to respond to Internet gambling and the numerous related social issues. This chapter provides an overview of the online gambling market and introduces key points that are essential to understanding the growth of and impact of this new mode of gambling.
